Bobby Moore
Haven't seen a thread on the first few pages so apologies if I'm going over old ground. Is anyone going along to the Boleyn tomorrow to tie a scarf to the gates / lay some flowers seeing this will be the last time we commerate his death at Upton Park?

Re: Bobby Moore
When people say Bobby Moore was the best defender ever, I think it is justified. Watch this 90 second clip and you can see why considering he was defending against the best Brazil team of all time, it wasn't just Pele, this was a whole team of brilliant individuals, certainly the best team I will ever see.

Re: Bobby Moore
I generally regard myself as fortunate: to be born in 1949 in east London, meaning I did my growing up through the best decade ever, the 60s, and in the best place to do it, London. It also meant I started following West Ham in March 1958 when I was 8 years old, a matter of months before Bobby made his debut in the newly promoted Hammers. I left England the same month Bobby went to Fulham.

I always have and always will feel privileged to have watched this immaculate footballer and genuine all round good bloke for his entire West Ham career.

Re: Bobby Moore
I know the game has changed loads but I reckon he'd still even today be considered an amazing defender.

Every old clip I've seen his ability to just nick the ball off someone and then send it inch perfect to someone 30 yards away.

Completely fuck up an opposing team's attack.

I met the great man once, it was as though a god was stood in front of me, i am never lost for words, but he told a joke and i could not grasp it, all i was thinking was its bobby moore, he probably thought whose this thick twat, but being the gentleman just smiled and shook hands, i was born in 1958 so as a kid grew up watching him play, was at wembley in 1975 when we beat fulham 2-0 it did not seem right that bobby moore was playing against us, apart from close family members i have only shed tears once when someone passed away, that was bobby moore, for me with franz beckanbaur the greatest defender ever.

Yes but could he head a ball 50 foot in the air like James Collins?

Bobby Moore's headstone is a few yards from my dad at the City of London, Manor Park.

Re: Bobby Moore
His critics said he wasn't the quickest nor the most commanding in the air. But looking at his performances at Wembley in 1965 and 1966, then in Mexico in 1970, his so-called weaknesses did not prevent him looking anything but perfect.

His ashes were later buried in his parents plot at the City of London cemetery in Manor Park.

Re: Bobby Moore
Does anybody else remember Bobby's tackle on Charlie Cooke at Stamford Bridge? Cooke picked up the ball in his own half & went on a run that left three of our players for dead. Cooke then approached the great man who backed off slightly, saw his chance, went down on one knee & with his extended leg calmly drew the ball towards his body, rose & turned through 360 degrees before magisterially processing up field, head up looking for that perfect pass.
It was a privilege to see him play.
